Dental Care for Neurodiverse Patients at Smile Haus

Gentle, personalised, and made just for you.

At Smile Haus, we believe everyone deserves to feel safe, seen and supported at the dentist — especially those in the neurodiverse community. Whether you or your child are living with autism, ADHD, sensory processing sensitivity, or another form of neurodivergence, we’re here to meet you exactly where you are.

We know that for many neurodiverse people, dental visits can feel overwhelming. So we’ve created a clinic environment — and a care approach — that’s calm, clear, and full of choice.

The Challenges: Why Dental Visits Can Be Hard

Everyone’s experience of neurodiversity is different, but some common challenges during dental care may include:

  • Sensory sensitivities to lights, smells, sounds, textures or touch

  • Difficulty sitting still for long periods

  • Overwhelm from unpredictable environments or unfamiliar routines

  • Anxiety about not being in control or not understanding what’s happening

  • Negative past experiences that make trust difficult

At Smile Haus, we don’t just understand these challenges — we prepare for them with intention, care, and kindness.

How We Support Neurodiverse Patients at Smile Haus

We’ve thoughtfully designed our clinic and our appointments to create a space where neurodivergent individuals feel safe, respected, and genuinely at ease.

Here’s how we help:

1. Gentle, Sensory-Friendly Cleaning

We use the EMS Airflow® system — a warm, water-based cleaning technique that replaces traditional scraping. It’s quieter, gentler, and far more comfortable for sensitive mouths.

No sharp instruments. No high-pitched sounds. Just a smooth, calming clean.

2. Noise-Cancelling Headphones + Weighted Blankets

For those with auditory sensitivity or anxiety, we offer noise-cancelling headphones so you can block out the clinic sounds and listen to something calming — or simply enjoy the quiet.

Our weighted blankets offer grounding comfort and can help reduce sensory overload or anxious energy.

3. Low-Stimulation Environment

From our aromatherapy-infused reception to our soft lighting and minimalist design, our space is intentionally calming. We also avoid strong clinical smells and bright fluorescent lighting wherever possible.

Sometimes the smallest things make the biggest difference.

4. Clear Communication + Full Consent

We always:

  • Explain what we’re doing before we do it

  • Let you decide whether or not we move forward

  • Welcome questions, pauses, and full-body breaks

You can stop at any time. You can ask for more time. You’re in control — always.

5. Fidget Toys and Comfort Tools

We offer fidget toys for patients who like to keep their hands busy, and you’re always welcome to bring your own comfort items. Our team also works with you (or your child) to find a rhythm that feels safe — whether that means multiple shorter visits, longer appointment slots, or seeing the same clinician every time.

6. Slow Dentistry with Extra Time

We offer extended appointments by request, so nothing feels rushed or pressured. If you (or your child) need time to settle in, ask questions, or take breaks — we’ve built that into the plan.

Just let us know when you book, and we’ll make sure you have the time and space you need.
